A great first dollhouse project, excellent quality materials

This is an excellent dollhouse kit which my husband purchased at Hobby Lobby for less than a hundred dollars (he got a coupon and there was a sale on). It took my husband about 50 hours to build this dollhouse. The kit comes with a set of instructions but like another reviewer mentions, the website for the product offers clear instructions which are relatively easy to follow. We allocated a space in the garage to work on this.I have posted images of the completed dollhouse. There is still some work to be done, such as putting the shingles on the roof, and my husband is working on it slowly but steadily. In the meantime, my daughter is able to play with it as can be seen in the picture with the furniture in each room. The back of the house is as portrayed - open for easy play. The side windows are attached to a wall which has hinges and can be pulled open to enable children to place furniture, move dolls around, etc. Similarly, the front part of the house (with the gable) can also be pulled out to enable placement of furniture etc.Our kindergartner loves this dollhouse and has been playing with it constantly ever since Christmas. The dollhouse furniture we got to go with this is from Mayberry Street Miniatures which is also sold through Hobby Lobby. There are so many delightful furniture pieces to go with the dollhouse. There are altogether eight rooms in this dollhouse and the suggested layout is:First floor - entryway/living room, kitchen, dining roomSecond floor - master bedroom, kids' room/ bathroomThird floor - library/family room, playroom/second kids' roomThe layout is flexible given the many rooms, which is another bonus of this particular dollhouse. The walls do need to be wallpapered (on the inside) and the outside needs painting.The materials we used were:Glue:White Glue (Elmer's)Super Glue - Gel typeSuper GlueSand paper: 320 Grit sanding pads and sponges 220 Grit 100/80 GritPaint: Pick your color scheme - include Clear Gloss and Matt Prime and then sand all pieces with 320 grit before applying final color Rust-Oleum Painters Touch spray paint offers a wide color palletWood filler: Elmer's wood fillerTools: Exacto knives of assorted types Putty knives Wood Shaping tools Hammer - small Brushes - for glue, paste and paintMisc: Wax paper ½", 1", 2" Masking tape Paper for paint masking Heat gun Clamps - small and medium Tape measure/18" steel ruler/2 X right angle squares Zip lock bowls (containers) Tac clothThis is a great first dollhouse and after our success, we are thinking of getting some of the smaller kits to create a little village theme! Definitely worth it if you can spare the time - a true labor of love!

If you have never built a dollhouse from a kit beware. There are TONS of pieces to be painted before any construction can begin and you need lots of space to organize and layout. If you like putting furniture together, etc, then this is probably something you will enjoy. This kit is very well made and all the pieces fit together very well but I think the biggest selling point is the [...] website. They have excellent step-by-step instructions here [...] that by far surpass the instructions provided in the kit. Without those this would have been much, much more difficult. My husband and I estimate we spent about 30 hours putting this together. This does not include any decorating except painting inside/out.On top of the dollhouse kit you will need to buy all the paint, a small saw for cutting the trim, sandpaper, brushes, shingle dye (we used regular stain from lowes), aleenas glue, non-water based glue for shingles (we used welders), razor scraper for cutting shingles. We got this kit at hobby lobby for about $105 (after a 40% off coupon printed from their website) so shop around.If I attempt to tackle another house it will probably be a bit smaller, probably the Princess Anne.
